This week's "sketchbook skool" assignment was to paint the sky where you're at. This is what I saw this morning. Yesterday I went into town and sketched at Irish Kevin's, well at least until some guy came in and sat down right behind me. He was basically looking over my shoulder and it was too much pressure for me, I was outta there. It was just a quick sketch, not even completed, but I did it and that's a big step for me. I need to get out and do more sketching in public.

I received an email yesterday morning with a link to an awesome video of fishing in Panama. I felt so home sick watching it I was almost in tears. Then in the evening the wind was blowing through the apartment lifting the ceiling tiles and letting them fall, just like they did in Patricia's apartment in David when we stayed with her. Once again it had me to the point of tears. Something has to change, I have to change something. Beautiful day and some beautiful art at the Pigeon Key Art Festival. There were two artist's that I particularly liked, Michelle Nicole Lowe who does some wonderful close up watercolors, and Charles Passarelli with rich juicy dripping watercolors. I always feel like such a slug when I go to one of these things. Everyone else seems to be producing like crazy and I'm lucky I can get anything done anymore. But by the time I get home from work, I'm mentally exhausted and to tired to paint. Well at least this morning I did work on a little project. No pictures yet, it's a present and they don't know they're getting it yet. I love surprises! I opened up my door to take the garbage out and there was this little beauty in the door jam. I screamed like a little girl and spammed the door. Unfortunately I reopened the door to see if I killed it and in it came. Scurried right under the shelving unit. It wouldn't be so bad but I think it had a load of babies on it's back. Got to love it! Still not as bad as the killer attack hermit crab. Just another learning experience in the "tropics". Big day planned, laundry, cleaning, cooking and shopping, last minute fishing invitation and all of that went out the window. The little baby grouper I caught two weeks ago, got a kiss and told to "go tell your mama" ala Mike Hinton and today I caught his mama and turned around and caught his daddy. Just another good day fishing! I need to start a category for fishing pictures. I've never been a morning person but since I've moved here I'm up early every morning and I am loving it. Of course waking up to views like this definitely is a plus. Moments like these a make me feel totally inadequate as a painter but I have to keep reminding myself I'm trying to capture the feeling not the imagine. Anyone with a camera can take a picture but what does it make you feel like? That is what I work towards. So much to look forward to this coming year! Elizabeth is letting me use her oven to bake my Panamanian rum cake, so I went to the store this morning to get all the ingredients. I stopped at the liquor store on the way home and look what I found. Ron Abuelo Anejo! Panamanian rum for my Panamanian rum cake, yummy. It's almost a shame to use it in a cake instead of drinking it. I might have to have a sip or two, ron con coco or ron con leche! My second attempt at wearing real shoes here. Failure again, blisters and new shoes returned even though they were cute. Between the flat feet and the bunions I am done with shoes. I still have a pair of 20 year old hiking boots and a couple of pairs of tennis shoes I can wear for short periods, other than that it's nothing but sandals for me. Bought a great pair today with lot's of padding and sole support for walking on the cement floors all day. Happy feet again! "There comes a time in your life when you need to stop crossing oceans for people who wouldn't jump puddles for you."
Barry posted this on Facebook today and it fits the situation perfectly. I can't even express how great my friends and family have been through this. The calls, the emails, opening your homes to me, I love each and every one of you! You all are boosting me up when I think I'm falling and encourage me to even bigger and better things. Thank you all so much! That doesn't even cover the tip of the iceberg. |
